Every summer thousands of children receiving free and reduced-price school meals lose an important source of food. During these tough economic times, many families simply don't have enough money to buy the food normally provided by school cafeterias. This summer, Willow Glen Baptist Church is stepping up to help fight childhood hunger by participating in Second Harvest Food Bank's 2010 Share Your Lunch food fund drive.

Here's what we can do to help:

DONATE FUNDS: click on the Second Harvest Food Bank logo 1) click donate now, 2) selcect Congregation as Donor Type, 3) choose Willow Glen Baptist Church.

All it takes is $10 to feed 20 children.

Pastors

Chris Tenny, Interim Pastor. We are pleased to welcome Chris as he steps into the leadership role of Interim Pastor while we search for God's leading and provision of a Senior Pastor. Chris and his wife, Cassie, are part of a team which is in the process of planting a church in downtown San Jose.

Bryan Prats, Youth Pastor. Bryan came on staff in March 2009 after having served in youth ministry for several years in a volunteer position. Bryan would like to see the youth of WGBC (and their friends) develop a deep walk with Jesus whereby they can meet the challenges of life! His talents include being a very good golfer (so look out if he asks you to go golfing with him!).

Frank Prats, Worship Ministries Director. Frank came on staff in July 2009 after having served in our music ministry for many years. Frank has been active in the construction business but in the past few months God tugged at his heart to take this step of faith (and we're glad he did)! He is married to Jean and they have two children and two grandchildren.

Office Staff

Jean Prats, Administrator. Jean oversees all scheduling functions in addition to
assisting the elders on various projects. Jean is married to Frank and they have
two grown children (as well as two grandchildren). Jean enjoys gardening!

Catherine Thiemann, Office Manager. Catherine's is the friendly voice you hear
when you call the church office. Catherine is married to John and they have one
son. Catherine also enjoys gardening!!

Elders

Along with the pastors, the elders serve unpaid as our top leadership team setting the direction and strategy for the overall ministry. They are Al Hanson, John Lunsford, and Frank Prats

Top 10 Guest Questions - Before My First Visit

What should I expect? You should expect to attend a relaxed service with exciting music and a message you can relate to. We want you to be as comfortable as you can. You won't be singled out in any way. Who should come? Our ministry is for anyone, regardless of where you are spiritually. Whether you're just starting to seek out spiritual things, or you're a hard-core "Jesus Freak," or somewhere in the middle, we have something for you. When is your service? Sunday at 9:30. You should plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so you can have time to park, get your kids settled (if applicable) before heading in to the service. How long is it?You should expect the service to last about 60 minutes. How do I get there? We are located in San Jose just 6 blocks west of downtown Willow Glen at 1292 Minnesota Ave. Google Map
Where do I park? When you drive in the entrance on Minnesota Ave, you can park in the first spaces you see, or you may continue straight and turn right around the back of the building to find additional guest parking. What should I wear? Come as you are. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. On any given Sunday you'll find everything from suits to shorts, but generally most people wear something in between. What about my kids? Do they stay with me or go somewhere else? If you'd like to have them in the service with you, you may. However, during each of our 9:30 Sunday services, kids up to 5th grade have the chance to play fun games, make new friends, and hear exciting stories and lessons that are applicable to their life in a fun, creative, age-appropriate environment at LIFE Time. Children 2 months to Pre-K are in their program for the entire service, while kids K-5th participate with the adults for the music part of the service and are dismissed with their group leaders to their program just before the message.
You want my money, right? NO! The collection, or "Offering" as we call it, that we receive at our Sunday service is for the WGBC family--those who call WGBC "my church." It is an opportunity for them to give a part of what God has given them back to Him. Please do not feel obligated to contribute. What do you believe? We believe that God loves the people of this world so much that he sent Jesus to earth to live life as a man and to die to take our place in spiritual death.

Kids LIFE - Living In our Father's Example
Our kids are enjoying Kids LIFE! We hope you kids will too!

Nursery: Children from 2 - 29 months are in the Nursery for the entire service.

Preschool: Children from 30 months through Pre-K are in the room across from the Nursery. They stay in the service for the music to worship with their parents. Once the music ends volunteers and kids are dismissed to their classroom.

Grade School: Children from Kindergarten through 5th grade are upstairs above the Nursery. They stay in the service for the music to worship with their parents. Once the music ends volunteers and kids are dismissed to their classroom. When you arrive, go to the Information Desk in the foyer to check-in your grade school aged child and give him/her a nametag. Then keep your child with you in the service until after the music worship part of the service when they are dismissed with the leaders to go to class.

At 10:30, when service ends, parents of Nursery and Preschool aged children will need to pick up their children from class. Grade school leaders will bring the children back to the foyer where they can be picked up. Children K-1st need to be checked out. Children 2nd grade and up will be freely released into the Worship Center at the close of the service. If the children are not present when the service completes, please go to the upstairs Kids LIFE room to pick them up ASAP.

Lovin' LIFE

From 11:00am to 12:00pm every Sunday we have a full hour of fun, music, videos, friendships, games and more designed for our children. This ministry is specially designed for the kids whose parents are attending one of our adult Life classes. We hope you can join us during this hour.

We are actively recruiting volunteers for the following positions:Nursery staff (On-Call/Substitute or Regular)Preschool Teachers or AssistantsKidsLIFE Lead Teacher or Group leadersCheck-In Desk Volunteer

Now, we take the safety and security of our kids seriously, so for each of these positions we will ask for you to go through our application process before you serve, but don't let that stop you from having a blast serving in KidsLIFE where our goal is for our volunteers to be so jazzed about serving that they can't wait to come! If you have a login to this site you can go to the Kids LIFE Staff page where the position desciptions are all listed.

Kids LIFE: Our goal and strategy - KidsLIFE

At Kids LIFE, our goal is to help parents instill their kids with five important values before they enter Junior High. Each one relates to the core values of WGBC.

WGBC Core Value: People
Kids LIFE Value: Honor. Honor treats people as special, does more than what's expected, and has a great attitude.

WGBC Core Value: Authenticity
Kids LIFE Value: Truth. Tell the truth, admit mistakes, know the Bible is true, process truth through dialog.

WGBC Core Value: Growth
Kids LIFE Value: Bible & Prayer. It is is important to read and memorize the Bible and pray.

WGBC Core Value: Relevance
Kids LIFE Value: Jesus. Jesus is God, not everyone knows Jesus, and we should tell people about Him.

WGBC Core Value: Mobilization
Kids LIFE Value: Serving. It's an important way to show people that we care.

So how do we reach this goal? I'm glad you asked.

1. We talk about them. Each Sunday, elementary age kids experience music and worship with the adults in our main service, then are dismissed with their leaders to LIFE Time. At LIFE Time, they hear a lesson at their level that is either a "kid version" of what the message is for the adults, or it's a lesson about one of the Kids LIFE values. Either way, one of more of the values is worked in to the lesson each week. After the roughly 15 minute lesson, the kids break out into small discussion groups based on their age. Here they can talk about the Big IDEA they heard in the lesson and how they can use it at home and at school.

2. Identify ways to use them. This is part of what the kids do in their small group. From time to time we also organize ways to put them in to action as a group.

3. Provide incentives to use them. We use a reward system with our own currency called "Pods" to provide incentives for kids to do things like memorizing scripture, serving the community, bringing friends, and "getting caught" using a Big IDEA at home or school. Kids save their Pods in the bank, MyPods, and use them at our store, PodPlace.

SJSU, SCU and DeAnza are just a few of the schools that are represented here on Wednesday nights at 7:30 and Sunday mornings at 11:00 a.m. What do they do? Eat, hang out, and learn practical Christianity (not necessarily in that order!). So, if you like to do any of the above, just show up or you can call 280-0611 for more details. .

Our Strategy - Our DNA

The question of strategy is "How do we implement our Mission in keeping with our Core Values?" If we desire that people grow to the level of spiritual maturity outlined above, we ask "What is it that makes or helps people grow spiritually?" We believe that spiritual and relational growth will happen on its own in the right environment. The right environment is the key. Since there are different types of growth that we are seeking, we provide three distinctly different evironments, and since our church is like a family, we relate those environments to a home.

Foyer: The foyer is a welcoming place where we expect guests. Our foyer is our main Sunday worship service and various community events we have throughout the year. It's a place of introductions and greetings. It's here that we begin the relationship.

Living Room: The living room is a comfortable place to connect with people. It is here that the relationship goes beyond the introductions to getting to know each other better. It is an environment characterized by discussion and common ground. Our living rooms are our . . .

LifeClasses - classes offered on Sunday mornings that address life issues such as finance, marriage, or parenting.

Discussion Groups - groups available Sunday morning or throughout the week that discuss topics of faith, perfect for those wanting to learn more about what it means to follow Jesus.

Coffee Shop - which is still in progress, but will be a place where people can hang out and connect after a service on Sunday.

Kitchen: The kitchen is a predictable place where people can live life. We believe that spiritual and relational growth happens best when a person is connected to a small group of people with a common bond. Our LifeGroups provide the opportuinty for people to connect on a regular basis based on their stage of life, neighborhood, or a common passion. LifeGroups meet weekly in various places around the valley. To find a LifeGroup just click on the "Find a LifeGroup" button at the top of this page.

Our Beliefs - Our DNA

The sole basis of our belief is the Bible, which is uniquely God-inspired, without error, and the final authority on all matters on which it bears. As the Bible teaches, there is one God, eternally existing in three persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — each possessing all the attributes of Deity.

God created humans to have fellowship with Him, but they defied God by going their own way. As a result, we need God's saving grace to end our alienation from Him. Salvation comes only through God's saving grace — not human effort — and must be received personally by repentance and faith.

Jesus Christ, second Person of the Trinity, lived a sinless life on earth and voluntarily paid for our sin by dying on the cross as our substitute. This accomplishes salvation for all who receive grace by trusting in Him alone. He rose from the dead and is the only mediator between us and God. He will return to earth to consummate history.

The Holy Spirit draws people to Christ and equips believers for personal growth and service to the church. The church's role is to honor God and serve those in need. At the end, everyone will experience a bodily resurrection and the judgment. Those forgiven through Christ will enjoy eternal fellowship with God.

We are here to reach people for Christ and grow them to spiritual maturity

What do we consider spiritually mature?

A spiritually mature person lives a lifestyle of . . .
Worship by putting God first in his/her time, abilities, and finances
Fellowship by being devoted to one another through caring, prayer, and sharing
Discipleship by living like Christ at home, work, and in the community
Ministry by serving using his/her SHAPE (Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences)
Evangelism by reproducing his/her faith through building relationship with unchured people.

Our Core Values - Our DNA

People: The people are the church. We are a group of people banding around a common desire to honor God by caring about people. People are at the heart of God and they are at ours as well.

Authenticity: Relationships are at the core of a loving, thriving church, and at the heart of every healthy relationship is authenticity. Authenticity begins with honesty about who we really are as individuals. Only with this honesty can we know each other deeply and meet each others’ needs.

Growth: We are here to promote an environment of spiritual growth where we can grow closer to God and to become more like Jesus; to grow in love for each other and for those who have not yet met Him.

Relevance: In order to influence people in the way of Jesus, we must know their needs, hurts, and struggles, and communicate the way of Jesus to those areas in a language that they can relate to. We are directed by the ever-changing culture through the lens of the never-changing truths of scripture.

Mobilization: Because we care about people, we strive to show in practical ways God’s unconditional love by serving each other and those in the communities in which we live.
