Pastors

Chuck Austin, Senior Pastor. Chuck came to Willow Glen Baptist Church after having pastored churches in San Mateo and Los Banos. He's been married to Janice since 1979 and they have two grown children (Holly and Ben). Janice teaches 2nd grade at Achiever Christian School where she enjoys teaching and loving kids. Chuck graduated from San Jose State University (B.A., History) as well as Denver Seminary (M.A.). What's the greatest thrill for Chuck in ministry? That's simple: it's seeing people trust in Jesus and live life fully for Him! What does Chuck do for fun? That's simple too: he likes to get together with friends and do whatever (go to movies, go out to eat, walk, travel, or just hang out together)! Chuck's an avid San Francisco Giants fan and any reason is good enough to take in a ballgame at AT&T Park!

Nathan Goodrow, Youth Pastor. Nathan came to our staff in March 2007 from Salem, Oregon. He oversees all the activities of junior high and high school and checks in with the college department from time-to-time. Just talk to Nathan and his wife, Julie, about the kids in junior high and high school and watch them both get excited over what God is doing! Nathan and Julie have no children as of yet ... but they do have four cats who keep them company!

Office Staff

Colleen Phillips, Administrator. Colleen is the grand organizer who keeps the staff and elders on track, and frees them up to do ministry without being bogged down by the administration end of things. She and her husband, Chris, live in San Jose and have three children: Kailey, Gabrielle, and John.

Elders

Along with the pastors, the elders serve unpaid as our top leadership team setting the direction and strategy for the overall ministry. They are Pastor Chuck Austin, Frank Prats, Al Hanson, John Lunsford, and Jack Nelson.

Top 10 Guest Questions - Before My First Visit

What should I expect? You should expect to attend a relaxed service with exciting music and a message you can relate to. We want you to be as comfortable as you can. You won't be singled out in any way. Who should come? Our ministry is for anyone, regardless of where you are spiritually. Whether you're just starting to seek out spiritual things, or you're a hard-core "Jesus Freak," or somewhere in the middle, we have something for you. When is your service? Sunday at 9:30. You should plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so you can have time to park, get your kids settled (if applicable) before heading in to the service. How long is it?You should expect the service to last about 60 minutes. How do I get there? We are located in San Jose just 6 blocks west of downtown Willow Glen at 1292 Minnesota Ave. Google Map
Where do I park? When you drive in the entrance on Minnesota Ave, you can park in the first spaces you see, or you may continue straight and turn right around the back of the building to find additional guest parking. What should I wear? Come as you are. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. On any given Sunday you'll find everything from suits to shorts, but generally most people wear something in between. What about my kids? Do they stay with me or go somewhere else? If you'd like to have them in the service with you, you may. However, during each of our 9:30 Sunday services, kids up to 5th grade have the chance to play fun games, make new friends, and hear exciting stories and lessons that are applicable to their life in a fun, creative, age-appropriate environment at LIFE Time. Children 2 months to Pre-K are in their program for the entire service, while kids K-5th participate with the adults for the music part of the service and are dismissed with their group leaders to their program just before the message.
You want my money, right? NO! The collection, or "Offering" as we call it, that we receive at our Sunday service is for the WGBC family--those who call WGBC "my church." It is an opportunity for them to give a part of what God has given them back to Him. Please do not feel obligated to contribute. What do you believe? We believe that God loves the people of this world so much that he sent Jesus to earth to live life as a man and to die to take our place in spiritual death.

Kids LIFE: Our goal and strategy - KidsLIFE

At Kids LIFE, our goal is to help parents instill their kids with five important values before they enter Junior High. Each one relates to the core values of WGBC.

WGBC Core Value: People
Kids LIFE Value: Honor. Honor treats people as special, does more than what's expected, and has a great attitude.

WGBC Core Value: Authenticity
Kids LIFE Value: Truth. Tell the truth, admit mistakes, know the Bible is true, process truth through dialog.

WGBC Core Value: Growth
Kids LIFE Value: Bible & Prayer. It is is important to read and memorize the Bible and pray.

WGBC Core Value: Relevance
Kids LIFE Value: Jesus. Jesus is God, not everyone knows Jesus, and we should tell people about Him.

WGBC Core Value: Mobilization
Kids LIFE Value: Serving. It's an important way to show people that we care.

So how do we reach this goal? I'm glad you asked.

1. We talk about them. Each Sunday, elementary age kids experience music and worship with the adults in our main service, then are dismissed with their leaders to LIFE Time. At LIFE Time, they hear a lesson at their level that is either a "kid version" of what the message is for the adults, or it's a lesson about one of the Kids LIFE values. Either way, one of more of the values is worked in to the lesson each week. After the roughly 15 minute lesson, the kids break out into small discussion groups based on their age. Here they can talk about the Big IDEA they heard in the lesson and how they can use it at home and at school.

2. Identify ways to use them. This is part of what the kids do in their small group. From time to time we also organize ways to put them in to action as a group.

3. Provide incentives to use them. We use a reward system with our own currency called "Pods" to provide incentives for kids to do things like memorizing scripture, serving the community, bringing friends, and "getting caught" using a Big IDEA at home or school. Kids save their Pods in the bank, MyPods, and use them at our store, PodPlace.

Our Strategy - Our DNA

The question of strategy is "How do we implement our Mission in keeping with our Core Values?" If we desire that people grow to the level of spiritual maturity outlined above, we ask "What is it that makes or helps people grow spiritually?" We believe that spiritual and relational growth will happen on its own in the right environment. The right environment is the key. Since there are different types of growth that we are seeking, we provide three distinctly different evironments, and since our church is like a family, we relate those environments to a home.

Foyer: The foyer is a welcoming place where we expect guests. Our foyer is our main Sunday worship service and various community events we have throughout the year. It's a place of introductions and greetings. It's here that we begin the relationship.

Living Room: The living room is a comfortable place to connect with people. It is here that the relationship goes beyond the introductions to getting to know each other better. It is an environment characterized by discussion and common ground. Our living rooms are our . . .

LifeClasses - classes offered on Sunday mornings that address life issues such as finance, marriage, or parenting.

Discussion Groups - groups available Sunday morning or throughout the week that discuss topics of faith, perfect for those wanting to learn more about what it means to follow Jesus.

Coffee Shop - which is still in progress, but will be a place where people can hang out and connect after a service on Sunday.

Kitchen: The kitchen is a predictable place where people can live life. We believe that spiritual and relational growth happens best when a person is connected to a small group of people with a common bond. Our LifeGroups provide the opportuinty for people to connect on a regular basis based on their stage of life, neighborhood, or a common passion. LifeGroups meet weekly in various places around the valley. To find a LifeGroup just click on the "Find a LifeGroup" button at the top of this page.

Our Beliefs - Our DNA

The sole basis of our belief is the Bible, which is uniquely God-inspired, without error, and the final authority on all matters on which it bears. As the Bible teaches, there is one God, eternally existing in three persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — each possessing all the attributes of Deity.

God created humans to have fellowship with Him, but they defied God by going their own way. As a result, we need God's saving grace to end our alienation from Him. Salvation comes only through God's saving grace — not human effort — and must be received personally by repentance and faith.

Jesus Christ, second Person of the Trinity, lived a sinless life on earth and voluntarily paid for our sin by dying on the cross as our substitute. This accomplishes salvation for all who receive grace by trusting in Him alone. He rose from the dead and is the only mediator between us and God. He will return to earth to consummate history.

The Holy Spirit draws people to Christ and equips believers for personal growth and service to the church. The church's role is to honor God and serve those in need. At the end, everyone will experience a bodily resurrection and the judgment. Those forgiven through Christ will enjoy eternal fellowship with God.

Discipleship by living like Christ at home, work, and in the community

People: The people are the church. We are a group of people banding around a common desire to honor God by caring about people. People are at the heart of God and they are at ours as well.

Authenticity: Relationships are at the core of a loving, thriving church, and at the heart of every healthy relationship is authenticity. Authenticity begins with honesty about who we really are as individuals. Only with this honesty can we know each other deeply and meet each others’ needs.

Growth: We are here to promote an environment of spiritual growth where we can grow closer to God and to become more like Jesus; to grow in love for each other and for those who have not yet met Him.

Relevance: In order to influence people in the way of Jesus, we must know their needs, hurts, and struggles, and communicate the way of Jesus to those areas in a language that they can relate to. We are directed by the ever-changing culture through the lens of the never-changing truths of scripture.

Mobilization: Because we care about people, we strive to show in practical ways God’s unconditional love by serving each other and those in the communities in which we live.
